A token for a social economy

As every nation has its own currency, every social economy must have its own token. A proprietary token helps building up a community, a sense of belonging. An identity.

The sense of value is first developed within the group, like kids who exchange Pokemon cards at school. If you have Pokemon cards, you are able to trade. You can play certain games for which you need the Pokemon cards. Then the cast grows, and some boys and girls who were not interested on cards suddenly develop a need of joining the clan. They feel excluded. They need Pokemon cards to belong, just to exchange them for other Pokemon cards. That is an odd Pokemon economy. They cannot exchange Pokemon cards for Drangonball cards, such behavior is not accepted within the clan. This community turns around a value. And the magic fades off in this fragile circle once you need to ask for mammy´s money in order to buy more cards.

Social networks developed a sense of value called “Like”. But Likes economies fail as likes are unlimited. In these economies a Like is issued and spent every time that a user click on the Like button. And users who stake Likes cannot spend them again.

Social economies are the evolution of Pokemon economies and Likes economies. In a social economy there is a circle in which tokens are always in circulation. If you stake, you may be loosing the chance of being social. If you are social you will earn more tokens, but being social means to spend. There is no need of mammy for earning nor spending. This is an economy for adults, where everybody is responsible of its wealth.

On Social Economies outsiders set an exchange rate on top of the token. If I wanted to participate but I didn´t want to be part of the community — I just wanted to be a tourist, a witness — I would need to find someone who is keen to give away some tokens in exchange of something with an equivalent value. Commerce. Market. Your token for my dollar. Your token for my token within another Social economy.

Social economies interacting, exchanging values. What is plentiful here in exchange of what has a short supply, but is abundant there. Social economies complementing other Social economies. That creates a full social economies ecosystem. Absolute freedom.

And everything started with a Pokemon on a card. With a Like.

With a token.
